Fuel assemblies and nuclear competence – for Germany and worldwide

At the Lingen site, Framatome’s subsidiary company Advanced Nuclear Fuels GmbH (ANF) has been manufacturing fuel assemblies for pressurized water reactors (PWR) and boiling water reactors (BWR) for more than 40 years. Apart from manufacturing fuel assemblies, Lingen also supplies powder and pellets to all Framatome's European fuel fabrication plants. Customer-specific requirements are translated into manufacturing specifications by experts in Erlangen. Close cooperation between the design division in Erlangen and the manufacturing division in Lingen ensures high product quality.

With its competencies, the Lingen site is contributing to the German nuclear phaseout. Unused fuel assemblies are disassembled and refitted for other uses. The removal of nuclear fuel from a decommissioned German power plant is a prerequisite for safe dismantling of the plant.

Fabrication of the fuel assemblies for the first core of the EPR power plant Olkiluoto 3 in Finland. Production of these 245, approximately 4.8 m long, PWR fuel assemblies in Lingen started in July 2017 and was completed in late 2017.

The production stages of fuel assembly fabrication are:

  • Powder production
  • Pellet production
  • Fuel rod production
  • Fuel assembly production.

The high manufacturing quality ensures not only excellent product performance in service, but also safety in nuclear power plants as fission products are safely enclosed.

A Lingen-designed welding facility for an Eastern European customer assembled and put into operation in Lingen before being shipped. The welding technology ensures completely leak tight fuel rods, and therefore contributes to the safe operation of fuel assemblies in service. Behind this are 50 years of experience and constant technological progress. Lingen welding facilities are part of Framatome’s portfolio and are in use worldwide in fuel assembly fabrication.
