    The Story
    First-of-a-kind solution

    Utility Challenge
    A utility needed baffle bolt replacements. Due to component aging, the baffle plates had shifted and a new bolt-by-bolt inspection would cause the plant to miss a license renewal deadline.

    Framatome Solution
    Framatome was stumped on this one. No existing approach would solve the issue. So the team came up with a first-of-a-kind solution — a simplified structural model, paired with a sophisticated statistical analysis that could reliably predict the entire bolt population’s future behavior. In the span of two weeks, Framatome’s team met the challenge and went beyond, working 24-hour shifts to develop the solutions, including the redesign of a probe, fabricating new transducers, upgrading the UT instruments, qualifying and deploying the new technique and doing inspections in tandem with engineering analysis.

    The Result
    The team was able to run millions of simulations to quickly develop a high level of confi dence to demonstrate the structural integrity of the plant’s internals and meet the deadline.

    The Story
    A new way of thinking

    Utility Challenge
    A plant was spending large amounts of time and money maintaining safety-related equipment. 10 CFR 50.69 allows for reduced regulatory burden on equipment that is of low safety significance.

    Framatome Solution
    The plant brought in Framatome to implement a pilot program for 50.69. Using PRA and plant experience, equipment can be re-categorized as low or high safety significance. This provides greater focus on what truly maintains plant safety. Low safety significant equipment can be removed from regulatory programs, and plant controlled treatments can be developed.

    The Result
    The process was so successful the plant abandoned the pilot program and launched a full implementation. They are now on the path to increase safety focus while reducing expensive regulatory oversight. Plus, the Framatome team will develop alternative treatments for them. Understanding regulatory rules and staying ahead of the curve is something you can count on, every day.

    The Story
    Fast Delivery

    Utility Challenge
    A utility is extending their operating license from 60 to 80 years. The scope included a very complex update to some reactor vessel materials aging evaluations, as well as Framatome-supplied replacement components. The schedule for the license amendment required a significant amount of work in a very short period of time, including incorporating input from multiple vendors.

    Framatome Solution
    Framatome assembled its experts, many of whom worked on the original license renewal efforts, to complete Environmentally Assisted Fatigue (EAF) evaluations. They also had to update a complex, multi-variable, regression analysis with new data from recent surveillance capsule materials testing.

    The Result
    Framatome mobilized quickly to meet the deadline. The team worked with the utility and the PWR Owner’s Group to complete close to a year’s worth of work in only four months, meeting the customer’s submittal deadline. Completing a ton of quality work in a hurry? That’s a common story of how we deliver.

    Framatome has performed regulatory-approved design basis and current licensing basis validation and reconstitution projects for more than one third of U.S. nuclear power plants. This solid foundation adds insight and expertise, which have proven invaluable to license renewal (LR)/subsequent license renewal (SLR) clients.

    Framatome has been involved in LR activities since the early 1990s and helped formulate the industry’s approach and methodology for license renewal.

    Framatome is dedicated to plant Long Term Operation (LTO) with a global presence and is familiar with the current NRC expectations and industry standards. Framatome has been involved since the initial efforts of the industry to establish a working process for LR, including development of the initial and revised Part 54 Rule, NEI 95-10, and the successful Industry Pilot Program at two nuclear sites.

    The Story
    The right fit

    Utility Challenge
    New revisions to a plant’s room heat-up calculations showed that the Auxiliary Feedwater Room Coolers needed to be upgraded. The coolers had been downgraded to non-safety, the new analysis showed that the coolers would now need to be categorized as safety-related. On top of that, the cooler was in a very congested area of the plant.

    Framatome Solution
    Under an EOC agreement, Framatome specified and delivered the upgraded safety-related coolers and designed the plant modification. The design provided the capacity, redundancy and train separation to meet the requirements and restore the plant design basis. The team worked around the clock as the equipment supplier, the architect engineer and the plant’s responsible engineer.

    The Result
    Working closely with the installation contractor resulted in a smooth replacement, despite tight tolerances and overcoming emergent challenges. The plant goals for safety, schedule and budget were met, and a long-standing design basis vulnerability was resolved. Being prepared results from listening and understanding.

    Integrated for success

    Utility Challenge
    When faced with a potential steam line break, a plant determined that the components in their switchgear room were not rated for the resulting indefinite 100% humidity environment. This would likely lead to a white finding with the NRC. They were pessimistic about their chances of avoiding the finding.

    Framatome Solution
    The plant had already filed a License Event Report with the NRC, so the clock was ticking. The Framatome team performed stress analysis on the steam lines and refined the customer’s GOTHIC model. This resulted in a significant reduction in the calculated environmental conditions. Then the team procured and tested switchgear equipment to validate it would perform its required function for at least 30 minutes at 100% humidity.

    The Result
    The team coupled analysis, procurement, and testing to achieve a solution quickly. The solution demonstrated reduced event severity. In the end, this avoided a white finding with the NRC.

    Utility Challenge
    A utility acquired and installed hardware and software for cyber security. Before the system could be fully configured, their expert left the company.

    Framatome Solution
    The utility turned to their Engineer of Choice relationship with Framatome to finish the job. Framatome partnered with McAfee and other specialty contractors outside the nuclear industry. We reconfigured and “hardened” the system by applying security updates and the correct patches to prevent vulnerabilities and produce a more robust configuration.

    The Result
    Not only is the utility’s cyber security solution up and running, it’s stronger. And, the process for hardening the system was standardized for future implementations, which created significant time savings. Framatome didn’t stop there; we continue to stay involved with the project, implementing updates and providing support. We stand by our work.

    When a plant decided to replace their feedwater heater, they faced differences between new and old equipment, along with many installation challenges.

    Framatome Solution
    Framatome teams provided a fullscope of seamlessly integrated services. This included the engineering analysis for the changes accounting for the tight clearances identified by metrology, as well as the complicated rigging requirements. Utilizing previous experience with large component replacements, the team adapted to emergent challenges to deliver a comprehensive solution.

    The Result
    Utilizing seamless integration of a full scope of services, Framatome completed the feedwater heater replacement. As the project evolved, a number of challenges had to be overcome. In every case, the team quickly and successfully addressed emergent issues. In the end, critical path time was minimized, and the project was a success.     The Story
    Upgraded reliability

    Utility Challenge
    A utility decided to upgrade their analog I&C system to an entirely digital, safety-related system to address obsolecence reliability issues and reduce costs.

    Framatome Solution
    Framatome was brought in to install the TELEPERM® XS digital control system. From the beginning of the project, Framatome was involved with hardware and software design and development of multiple design change packages. The Framatome team was also the customer licensing agent to support the NRC 50.59 rule and conducted the independent verification and validation (V&V) with the software. Lastly, Framatome supported the outage for total installation.

    The Result
    In the end, the utility’s new digital system response times were much quicker and more reliable and ongoing operation and maintenance costs were significantly reduced. This was the first fully digital safety-related system installed in the U.S. with a skill set that can be applied to the same or smaller projects. To date, there have been no operational or complaint-related issues with this system.

    The Story
    Predicting the future

    Utility Challenge
    A system analytics modeling challenge was issued by a U.S. nuclear utility. The goal was to reduce operator burden and maintenance costs and improve plant reliability.

    Framatome Solution
    Framatome used N-Vision™ data analytics to automate asset data collection and reporting. The first step of the challenge was to integrate the data from various data sources throughout the plant. Framatome executed the rare event detection function on six pre-identified events. Using automatic fi ltering, the team developed event detection models. To test the model, Framatome used data for the event and updated any tags as necessary to ensure accurate detection.

    The Result
    N-Vision™ was able to process a terabyte of information to detect a similar event based on the data. The team received data on a potential plant failure one hour earlier than alarm indications. The data was also able to explain reasons for alarms and downstream consequences of the event. Do we have the ability to see into the future? Nope, just another innovative solution.

  • Power Uprates

    Power Uprates

    The Story
    The power of relationships

    Utility Challenge
    A utility wanted to increase power generation from a plant. They decided to perform a Measurement Uncertainty Recapture (MUR) and an Extended Power Uprate (EPU).

    Framatome Solution
    Framatome performed both uprates. The MUR installed Leading Edge Flow Meters (LEFM) allowing increased power output. The EPU was more complex — it involved going through the entire plant, system by system, and tackling everything from licensing to plant modifications and safety analysis. The best way to get it done was working in lock-step with the utility’s uprate team, and Framatome did just that, dedicating on-site personnel and thousands of manhours.

    The Result
    The MUR was completed in just nine months, an industry record, and resulted in an immediate uprate. The EPU resulted in several innovations such as LPI crosstie and increased power output. The real success? The utility and Framatome developed relationships that had everyone working toward a common goal, every day.

    The Benefit
    Working together on difficult challenges to find solutions

     

    There are many factors that need to be considered for power uprates, such as fuel burnup, secondary side equipment limitations and the remaining licensed plant life. Many plants have elected to make major equipment upgrades along with any of the three uprate types to provide additional output. Improvements in turbines and MSRs can increase a plant’s output by up to 20 MWe.

    Framatome has extensive expertise in all areas of power uprates, which allows us to focus the engineering where it counts, while providing broad coverage to ensure that overall risks are evaluated and managed. We offer customers the essential skill sets in electrical, civil, mechanical, and I&C, as well as the experience in nuclear steam supply systems and fuel design, to provide turnkey power uprate services.

    A utility wanted to move from deterministic fire protection to a risk-informed plan. The scope included coordination and management of the project as well as information management across the entire fleet.

    Finding the right partner. In this case Framatome teamed up with a competitor to bring the utility the solution they needed. How did competitors work together? We understood each other’s scope and worked in parallel. Then we used peer review to validate the work — we check their work, and they check ours.

    The Result
    The utility benefits from leveraging the experience and skill of two vendors. And, they get a seamless transition of data as a result. Additionally, a process was developed that can be used going forward to bring best-in-class Fire PRA solutions to the entire industry. Now utilities get higher-quality Fire PRA assessments from committed partners. We overcame our differences and worked together for mutual benefit.

    Framatome’s committed and highly experienced Fire Protection group has provided engineering services to the nuclear power industry for more than 25 years, bringing experience and global capabilities to the majority of the U.S. nuclear power plant fleet.

    Framatome’s Fire Protection group has the expertise to support the nuclear fleet in resolving issues associated with all aspects of their license-based Fire Protection Program, whether they retain the prescriptive 10 CFR 50 Appendix R, or transitioned to the 10 CFR 50.48.c NFPA 805 performance-based programs.

    Framatome has extensive experience in developing classical fire protection system analysis/design/implementation as well as on-site support services. With the advent of EPU, NFPA 805 risk reduction and license renewal requirements, Framatome’s Fire Protection group has supported plants in developing/implementing modifications to protect new transformer installations, plant fire alarm system replacement and incipient detection designs to address the program commitments in a costeffective manner.

    A utility was required to re-evaluate seismic at their operating plants following the Fukushima Daiichi accident. The scope included seismic equipment list, seismic walk downs, structure and component fragility analysis, seismic PRA, alternative actions and an industry peer review. The objective was to limit unnecessary plant modifications and realistically represent plant safety.

    Framatome Solution
    The best solution would require a diverse group of industry subject matter experts — so that’s what was provided. Bringing together leaders in seismic hazards, fragility analysis, plant operations and probabilistic risk, the team implemented an approach that iteratively improved results and pinpointed concerning systems, structures and components. They focused on what mattered most, ensuring costs were providing value.

    The Result
    The team provided an assessment that validated safe operations, met regulatory requirements, achieved a successful peer review and minimized expense on plant modifications.

    Framatome’s experience includes knowledge of the regulatory framework and ASME/ANS Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) standard, development of seismic fragilities, integration of the seismic PRA model into the existing internal events PRA model, and active participation in seismic risk evaluation industry meetings.

    Framatome has developed a costeffective, integrated and iterative approach for seismic risk evaluations to identify any additional analyses or modifications early and minimize the duration of the analysis. The Framatome seismic evaluation methodology meets the requirements of Regulatory Guide 1.200, ASME/ANS PRA Standard, and the Seismic Evaluation Guidance (SPID).

    Plants need a dependable resource for spare parts. In one instance, an operator needed Velan Gate Valves delivered three months ahead of typical production time.

    Framatome Solution
    Framatome’s Nuclear Parts Center (NPC) jumped into action and traveled to the supplier site to ensure the needed inventory was supplied to meet the outage window — just one example in a 40-year history of providing on-time delivery of high-quality parts to the nuclear industry.

    The Result
    The NPC stocks approximately 22,000 parts a year at the Level B storage facility, which is ISO 9001 and 18001 certified. The NPC provides ASME N, NPT, and NR Certificates of Authorization. Their portfolio has expanded to offer innovative solutions to help utilities with all reactor types to lower their inventory costs while maintaining access to high-quality inventory, every day.

    A plant needed a more reliable air start system for their emergency diesel generator. Options needed to be evaluated in order to determine the best approach.

    Framatome researched the options and interviewed plant operations and maintenance personnel. The resulting scoping study included a cost-benefit analysis, compared different product solutions and ultimately worked with other equipment vendors to come up with the optimum solution.

    The Result
    The diesel generator modification was completed smoothly, on an expedited schedule at a fixed cost. The project scoping document was so successful, it has now been adopted as the preferred approach for future modifications. Implementing solutions that are used as the model for future work?
