Slovenia: AREVA NP installs I&C upgrade at Krško nuclear power plant

AREVA NP has upgraded the instrumentation & control (I&C) technology of the Krško nuclear power plant* located in Slovenia. The system monitors and records the neutron flux in the reactor core. Movable flux sensors are brought into the reactor pressure vessel to collect data which provide significant information for the operator to ensure safe operation of the plant.

Under this contract, AREVA NP has manufactured the flux sensors and electromechanical components, supplied the control cabinets, provided qualification testing and installed and commissioned the system at the plant.

“The successful implementation of the neutron flux monitoring system at Krško is yet another proof of our capabilities to perform comprehensive nuclear power plants’ I&C systems retrofits of various designs”, said Krystel Frezza, I&C Business Line Manager at AREVA NP.

AREVA NP modernizes I&C systems in installed fleets of virtually all reactor designs and equips both its own new build reactors and non-AREVA NP reactor projects. The company has implemented complete core instrumentation systems in more than 100 nuclear power plants worldwide.

* The Krško nuclear power plant’s pressurized water reactor has an installed net capacity of 696 megawatts. It started commercial operation in 1983. The plant is located in the south-east of Slovenia.
