Framatome congratulates EDF on its application to build Sizewell C

Framatome congratulates EDF for its application to the planning Inspectorate for a Development Consent Order (DCO) to build the Sizewell C nuclear power plant on the Suffolk coast of England.

The construction project will create 25,000 jobs and 1000 apprenticeships, with up to 70% going to UK companies. Once operational, it will employ 900 people in high-skilled positions. Sizewell C will supply electricity to six million homes with total power generation of 3.2 GW.

For Framatome, this request constitutes excellent news and a significant milestone for EDF. Our teams stand ready to support EDF in the construction of these two new EPRs that contribute to the UK’s carbon neutral objectives by 2050.

Upon receipt of this submission, the Planning Inspectorate has 28 days to assess whether the application is complete. The selection process is then expected to take 18 months with final validation of the project from the British government.

With its two planned EPRs, Sizewell C is a near replica of Hinkley Point C. This offers an opportunity to benefit from the HPC experience at Hinkley Point C to manage the project schedule and reduce construction costs.

The Sizewell site currently is home to two power stations. Sizewell A opened in the 1960s and closed in 2006. Sizewell B has been in operation since 1995. Like Hinkley Point C, the plant will be developed by EDF alongside the Chinese CGN.
