Framatome announces 2020 Engineer of the Year Awards

March 4, 2020 – Framatome announced two Engineers of the Year as part of the annual commemoration of national Engineers Week. These awards honor North American employees who achieved engineering excellence and were “Pioneers of Progress” through notable accomplishments in their profession and engagement in their communities.

“These awards recognize employees at Framatome who go above and beyond to develop innovative solutions and creative technologies in our industry, while giving back to their local communities,” said Gary Mignogna, president and CEO of Framatome in North America. “We’re proud that our team’s creative thinking advances our industry and provides a better future for the world in which we live.”

Steven Anthony in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, and Dave Scott in Lynchburg, Virginia, were selected as Framatome’s 2020 Engineers of the Year. These two individuals demonstrated operational excellence throughout 2019 and were instrumental in innovating competitive solutions that improve the economics and performance of the nuclear energy industry.

• Steven Anthony, Installed Base Business Unit, was recognized for research and development efforts to address an industry challenge. Grease hardening on low- and medium-voltage circuit breakers within nuclear plants requires frequent maintenance to ensure reliable operation, which results in high plant operation and maintenance costs. Under Steven’s leadership, Framatome demonstrated an extended maintenance interval through successful testing of advanced synthetic lubrication on low- and medium-voltage vacuum circuit breakers. The advanced lubricant offered as part of Framatome’s Maintenance Interval and Life Extension Solutions (MILES) program extends maintenance intervals from five to 14 years, saving nuclear power plants significant time and money.
   
• Dave Scott is the subject-matter expert for Framatome’s SPEC 200 product line, supporting instrumentation and control (I&C) systems that serve as part of the central nervous system of a nuclear power plant. Under Dave’s leadership, Framatome has begun partnering with utility customers around the world to develop SPEC 200 module refresh strategies as they position their plants for eventual digital I&C upgrades. The SPEC 200 manufacturing facility opened in Lynchburg in 2019. Along with his work on the SPEC 200 product line, Dave served as the technical lead for an ongoing balance-of-plant engineered safety features actuation system (ESFAS) replacement and was a key contributor to advancing that system. The ESFAS allows operators to control and manage reactor operations to ensure efficient and reliable power generation. Dave is also active in the community, supporting corporate outreach initiatives in addition to serving as a first responder.

During Engineers Week, Framatome also recognized Engineers of the Year in each business unit. This year, recipients were spread across the country at the company’s facilities in Washington, Pennsylvania and Virginia. They include:

Framatome recognized its engineers as part of Engineers Week, which took place February 16‑22, with the theme “Pioneers of Progress.” Candidates for the Engineer of the Year award are nominated by their peers. Business leaders and senior executives select finalists and the Engineer of the Year. Nominees are evaluated based on their contributions to their business unit during the year and how well they exemplify operational excellence through their commitment to safety, quality, performance, delivery, innovation and community involvement.
