China: Framatome delivered comprehensive instrumentation and control system for Tianwan Unit 3

May 25, 2018 | 1 min |
Framatome provided Jiangsu Nuclear Power Corporation (JNPC) with its safety instrumentation and control (I&C) system for unit 3 of the Tianwan* nuclear power plant. This new built unit was successfully connected to the power grid on December 30, 2017 for the first time. Its commercial operation is scheduled for 2018.

Framatome supplied the digital safety system based on the company’s proven TELEPERM XS platform, the respective instrumentation, I&C power supply cabinets and the operational I&C. The solutions help ensuring the safe operation of the reactor at any time by monitoring all relevant data like temperature, pressure and radiation. In the case of unexpected events, the system brings the reactor automatically into safe shut-down mode.

“The project marks another highlight of Framatome’s continuing collaboration with JNPC and Rosatom in the field of safety I&C solutions. The valuable experience which has been already gained in Tianwan Units 1 and 2, where the safety and operational I&C part was already successfully supplied and commissioned, paved the way to this great achievement. It demonstrates our unique capabilities to support Russian reactor designs in all areas with technology solutions and our proven VVER I&C engineering skills, both for new build and modernization projects”, said Frédéric Lelièvre, Senior Executive Vice President in charge of Sales, Regional Platforms and
the Instrumentation and Control Business Unit at Framatome.

For VVER type new build reactors, Framatome has already supplied comprehensive safety I&C solutions to China, Russia and Slovakia.

*Tianwan 3 and 4 are VVER type pressurized water reactors with an installed net capacity of 1000 megawatts. The plant is owned and operated by Jiangsu Nuclear Power Corporation, a joint venture between China National Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (50 percent), Shang Hai HeXi Power Investment Corporation (30 percent), and Jiangsu Guoxin Group (20 percent).
