June 3, 2022 – Framatome’s Quantom technology received a Nuclear Innovation Prize at Euradwaste’22 in the radioactive waste management category. The Framatome solution accelerates the inspection and identification of nuclear waste packages’ material content.

“Innovation is at the heart of what we do at Framatome to better serve our customers,” said Catherine Cornand, senior executive vice president of the Installed Base Business Unit, Framatome. “Quantom is a technological breakthrough solution that reduces inspection time from weeks to couple of hours, saving our customers time and overall costs by at least 50 percent. We are honored to receive this award from the European Commission in recognition of our commitment to excellence at Framatome.”

Quantom (Quantitative Analysis of Toxic and non-toxic Materials) is a mobile, non-destructive drum inspection system that reliably analyzes the material content of radioactive waste packages by using neutrons as probes. This technology helps operators to promptly identify, analyze and act, leading to efficiency gains and reduced costs.

Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Quantom was developed by Framatome in cooperation with Aachen Institute for Nuclear Training and the Fraunhofer Institute for Scientific Technological Trend Analysis.

The Nuclear Innovation Prize highlights and rewards excellence in nuclear innovation. The contest aims to identify potential disruptive innovations across product developments and their supply chain, from research to market where researchers and engineers play a critical role.

All project partners were honored at Euradwaste’s ceremony on May 31 in Lyon, France. This was the 10th edition of the Euratom research and training conference on radioactive waste management. The conference is supported by the European Commission together with the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives (CEA), under the auspices of the French Presidency of the Council of the EU.
