
Non-destructive material characterization and quantification - Mobile QUANTOM waste measurement cell
Main description
To meet nuclear waste's examination needs fully non-destructively, we have developed QUANTOM a QUantitative ANalysis of TOxic and non-toxic Materials. Prior to the introduction of QUANTOM, the process of inspecting and identifying the material content of nuclear waste packages was a time and cost intensive process that could take more than 3 weeks. Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, we developed an innovative solution in cooperation with AiNT GmbH and the Fraunhofer Institute for Scientific Technological Trend Analysis. QUANTOM reduces the inspection time to less than 4 hours and reduces the overall costs for examination by at least 50%. On top, to meet the demand of flexibility and lean processes we created a QUANTOM as a mobile device that allows examining the material and toxic content of nuclear waste packages at their storage site directly.
