Framatome selected to support component modernizations at Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant

April 12, 2022 | 1 min |

April 12, 2022 – Framatome was recently selected to support the emergency diesel generator (EDG) retrofit program for the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant operated by Vattenfall in Sweden. Framatome will provide the company’s Modular Analogous Excitation System (MAEX) for 12 generators supplied by VEM Sachsenwerk GmbH. The contract illustrates Framatome’s ability to provide high-quality and flexible solutions for upgrading nuclear generator critical components around the world.

“Framatome has the technical and global expertise to consistently provide sound solutions for our customers including the non-OEM Framatome installations,” said Catherine Cornand, senior executive vice president, Installed Base Business Unit at Framatome. “This project secures the long term operations of Forsmark for the continuation of reliable, low-carbon power generation in Sweden.”

Framatome’s excitation system provides the field of current to the rotor winding of a generator. It is a software-free modular system for brushless generators designed to provide reliability of operation, stability and fast transient response. The flexible design is a qualified global solution for EDG systems and allows for fast and cost effective integrations into new and existing infrastructure. The base module of the MAEX system fulfills all safety-relevant functions for voltage regulation, operation and signalization.

Framatome’s scope also includes supervision and support of the installation in the Swedish boiling water reactors. The modernization of the Forsmark EDG systems will start during the spring 2023 outage with completion planned 2028.
