Framatome's Operational Center of Excellence in Richland, WA, provides fuel products and related components and services for commercial pressurized water reactor (PWR) and boiling water reactor (BWR) customers worldwide.

Our fuel engineering team, located in Richland, Wash., can provide a full scope of engineering design, licensing and operational support for reload cores. We maintain and develop codes and methods for the design and analysis of the PWR and BWR fuel. We also use NRC-approved codes to develop innovative incore fuel management plans and perform fuel cycle licensing analyses. Support is  provided for reactor operating cycle lengths ranging from 12 to 24 months as well as 120 percent extended power uprates.

Framatome's Richland Facility

Fuel produced in Richland accounts for five percent of the electricity generated in the United States and has produced fuel for more than 40 years. In 2009, the Richland site received the industry's first 40-year Nuclear Regulatory Commission site license renewal.

The Richland facility is licensed for the processing of uranium up to 5.0 wt% U235 and has a capacity of up to 1,800 metric tons of commercial nuclear fuel per year. The site is fully integrated including gadolinia fuel (pellets and rods), upper and lower end fitting fabrication, component manufacturing, and uranium recovery services.

The Richland facility has patented a dry conversion process, which is a unique method of converting feed uranium hexafluoride (UF6) gas to UO2 powder. The process generates essentially no liquid waste, a major environmental advancement over competing “wet” processes. The three dry conversion lines produce the energy equivalent of 30,000 tons of coal per hour.
